Manager, Environmental Health & Safety

Rochester, NY

Summary:     The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager will lead and direct the environmental, health and safety responsibilities for RED-Rochester, LLC.  As an integral member of the company’s Management Team, the EHS Manager will provide leadership, strategic direction and advise management with regard to the EHS implications of all of its operations.  This position is also responsible for formulating a proactive enterprise-wide EHS strategy that drives the company to sustain itself as an environmentally compliant, healthy and safe operation.

 Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental or Safety Engineering, Occupational Safety or closely related degree required.
  • An advanced degree and/or recognized EHS certification or documented training (e.g. PE, CIH, CSP, etc.) is preferred.
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive responsibility in an EHS related career.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience working in a heavy industrial or power generation      environment with heavy focus on Title V/air permitting and regulations, RCRA permitting and regulations and waste water management compliance.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience training personnel and managing direct EHS reports (i.e. – plant or department management).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant federal, state and local occupational environmental, health and safety laws and regulations as they apply to: safety (OSHA), air emissions from the generation of electricity (EPA/NYDEC Title V); chemical bulk storage and petroleum bulk storage (CBS/MOSF); solid waste and the incineration and transportation of hazardous waste (RCRA/NYSDOT); water withdrawal, cooling water intake (NYSDEC,SPDES, EPA);the collection and treatment of industrial waste water (SPDES); non-transient non-community water system (NYS DOH); and cooling tower regulations (NYS DOH).
  • Prior experience in developing and implementing environmental, safety programs and related workforce training curriculums.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that all of RED-Rochester’s operations meet or exceed all federal and state EHS regulations and additional requirements as set forth by management.
  • Develop and implement EHS policies and programs to meet all EHS permit requirements including workplace safety, air emissions, solid waste, hazardous waste, oil chemical bulk storage, non-transient non-community water system, cooling water intake, wastewater and storm water.
  • Provide environmental, safety and health analysis of new processes, procedures, equipment, engineering guidelines and standards review, contractor safety, and all major engineering activities/projects.
  • Drive a continuous process improvement approach to the company’s EHS culture.
  • Ensure that EHS staff schedules and conducts periodic safety meetings, classes and facility inspections.
  • Pursue appropriate professional development.
  • Facilitate all aspects of incident reporting and investigation processes.
  • Support Human Resources with the management of workers compensation cases.
  • Make EHS capital equipment recommendations.
  • Occasional after-hours, weekend work, and travel may be required.


  • Ability to take a strategic view of environmental needs of the business, work closely with management to integrate environmental strategy into the overall business strategy and then drive the execution of these plans with internal resources and external consultants as necessary.
  • Has the skills, leadership and experience to proactively lead high level as well as detailed environmental due diligence efforts in a logical, cost effective, progressive manner on targeted power plants as part of the Company’s merger and acquisition activities on a case-by-case basis.
  • Can cost effectively manage outside consulting firms to extract value-adding service while managing consulting hours to a budgeted or targeted cost.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, influential skills, project management and ability to develop and deliver effective EHS-related training.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to interact with all levels of the organization, including plant operators as well as customers and outside professionals.
  • Strong verbal, written, presentation and English language communication skills.

Work Environment: Normal office and industrial park conditions

 Physical Demands:

  • Able to operate computer keyboard, printers, copiers, etc.
  • Visual and hearing ability.
  • Able to move between buildings in Eastman Business Park which may require climbing as many as four flights of stairs from time-to-time.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and willingness to use personal car to travel about Eastman Business Park which covers approximately 5 square miles.
